2008 TOYOTA TUNDRA Consumer Complaint

1Complaint Number: 10238459Incident Date: August 15, 2008Date Added to File: August 16, 2008
Description of the Complaint:
Bought a new 2008 toyota tundra double cab 5.7 liter v-8 4x4 had 52 miles on it aug 8, 2008. During the drive home from the dealership the transmission exhibited the rumble strip vibration under light engine load as described in the quote from automotive news october 22, 2007 - 12:01 am et i found on the world wide web. See quote below. Motor trend also mentions it in an online review. I expect the dealer will fix this issue but other online blogs suggest the issue can become severe enough to prevent shifting into or out of gear. If the reports are correct this becomes a safety issue possibly stranding driver and occupants in a dangerous setting with a vehicle that won't move. Toyota should address this and current owners should be notified of the possible safety concern. A google search of tundra rumble strip vibration will yield information on the issue. Los angeles toyota motor sales officials have nicknamed the problem "the rumble strip" because the slippage causes vibration similar to the sensation of driving over the wake-up strips at the side of highways. The rumbling usually lasts several seconds. But the problem sometimes worsens to the point that some owners can't shift into certain gears. The problem has been reported only in six-speed transmissions, which are linked to the popular 5.7-liter v-8 engine. Since the 2007 tundra's february launch, the 5.7-liter engine has been installed in 70 percent of about 135,000 tundras sold. That means the problem could affect nearly 100,000 vehicles.

I can't even put my baby niece in the car because, her head will start bouncing everywhere. The problem needs to be addressed and fixed by toyota.

Description of the Complaint:
2008 toyota tundra double cab 4x4 sr5 w/trd off road this truck is clearly unsafe to drive. When you drive the truck and hit a bump in the road, the truck bed bounces. It will actually affect the sterring and ablity to controll the vechile. While driving the truck at highway speeds, if you hit a large bump it is excepitionally hard to steer and controll. I know truck beds can bounce, but this truck is way more than the norm!! the bounce has actually led to my 1st tundra's bed to be out of square 1 1/2 . Further more , if you measure from the back of the cab to the top of the bed, there was a difference of 1 3/4 inches from the left and right side. Please help! toyota has reconized the problem of the bed bounce, but refuses to help. This is a problem is serious and needs to be looked into imedately. Please call if you guys have any questions i will be glad to help. Thank you

After about 45 days i started noticing scratches all over my truck. It had never been off road and had only been hand washed by the dealership. Toyota corp. And the dealership were of absolutly no help. Yesterday i bumped(and i mean barely bumped) the hood with the water hose while washing it, and it took the paint off all the way down to the metal! unbelievable! a $40,000 truck that is ruined! i will have to invest thousands of dollars for a new paint job.

Description of the Complaint:
I have owned my 2008 toyota tundra for 6 weeks now and love my truck!! the only problem is with the factory paint job. The paint on this vehicle scratches far too easy. If a hose rubs on it, or if someone's jacket rubs along the vehicle, it will scratch all the way down to the metal! i understand that this is a pickup truck, but toyota should stand behind the quality of their work.

Description of the Complaint:
Purchases 2008 toyota tundra sr5 4x4 5.7 v8 4/30. On 5/1 began hearing loud bang as car changed gears from 2nd to 3rd. The bang noise was often so loud it sounded like i have ran over something metal in the road. Happened most times i entered car and it changed from 2nd to 3rd. Took to dealer to address and they were unable to duplicate. Actually, the service advisor was able to duplicate, but that was not sufficient for the dealer to address the problem as the advisor is not qualified access an issue. Yet, each time i drove the car it happened. Finally after several days i was able to duplicate the problem with the service manager in the car. The bang was loud, and the manager did not know what it was. After several more days they were unable to locate a problem. Many diagnostic tests were performed on the truck yet there were no "codes" showing. I was not satisfied with that answer and went to the dealership owner. After a few days we were able to duplicate the problem with him in the car. Then we had the service director in car and duplicate the issue. I had no less than 4 employees of the dealer duplicate the issue. Finally, after 25 days in the shop, it was determined to be the abs system. Apparently when the tundras start up they will do a abs self test somewhere between 10-20 mph. Mine was apparently overtesting. A part was replaced in my car, around a $3000 part, and away i went. It seems to be less of a bang noise, but it is still there. To show that it was "normal," the service director and i took ride in a new tundra off of the lot. It made the same noise. I would have never bought a truck that i knew made a noise like that, never. But it appears they all do. Why di it take the dealer 25 days to figure this out? do the 2008 tundras have an abs problem?

Description of the Complaint:
08 tundra crewmax. Has multiple scratches in the paint. Paint is very thin (one coat). Paint can not even be washed without scratching. Truck has scratches on it from leaning over the bed, also around all the door handles from just opening the doors, not to mention all the marks around the door and tailgate from just our hands. $45,000 truck...You would think that they could atleast put a good coat of paint on it. This will cost me thousands to fix. The truck has never been off road and should have no visible marks. This is ridiculous.

Description of the Complaint:
I purchased my 2008 tundra in march of 2008. After have the truck for 30 days, i noticed scratches in the paint. I took my truck down to the dealer, and they wanted me to pay $700 to put simoniz on my paint. I was not going to pay if there was a paint problem with my 2008 tundra. Every time i washed my truck more and more scratches started showing up. I started waxing the paint to remove them, but they keep appearing. I contacted toyota, and they said to take it to the service manager. I took it to the service manager and he said he could not do anything until the toyota rep looked at it. I waited until the rep was in town, and i took it to him. The toyota rep said he could see that my paint was scratching but he did not see that it was a warranty item. He said since the paint is not bubbling, peeling or falling off that it is not a warranty item. Plus he said since my paint is scratching from an external source that toyota would not warranty it. They would not get a professional to look at it, and would not allow an independent paint professional to look at it. They said i could take it to whomever i wanted but they would not accept whatever they found. Toyota has a paint problem, but they will not do anything about it. I am not alone... We have started a petition on line, but it really will not have any affect unless someone bigger gets involved. Description of the Complaint:
The truck is a 2008 toyota tundra 4x4 limited supercrew. The drive train thuds and clanks when accelerating and decelerating. It is getting progressively worse. The truck was taken back to the dealer on three occasions. They advise that they can not duplicate the thuds and do not feel them. I have had no less than five people drive my truck and they all advised they can feel the now violent bangs and thuds. Earnhardt toyota service tech's advised they don't feel the thuds. If they would just tell me the thuds are normal instead of lying to me saying they don't feel anything it would be much easier to swallow. On one occasion i stopped abruptly and the driveline made a very loud noise and felt like the entire undercarriage came out of the truck. I had to pull off the road due to the incident scaring me. The drivetrain in this truck is absolutely junk and i feel dangerous.

Duped again-had a 2007 tundra crew max, 4x4 limited which was purchased back by toyota under lemon law, due to serious front suspension vibration problems. Toyota assured me that the problems will be fixed in the newer models so i purchased a 2008 model (silly me). Now the 2008 is doing the same thing and has crackling sound from the front suspension and bed hop.

Description of the Complaint:
Toyota tundra 4wd truck with standard rims (steel) and michelin tires. While driving interstate 80 at speed (fast lane) the entire truck began shaking. It was as bad as having a flat tire. I have a great deal of experience driving off road and i handled the problem without incident but i suspect many drivers would be frightened/panicked enough to result in an accident .My theory is the truck when driven at certain speeds on certain surfaces becomes unstable because of unfavorable harmonics which are generated by the suspension/tire/road surface interaction. I like the truck otherwise and intend to keep it but i think someone is going to lose their life or be seriously injured (if it has not happened already). Toyota may be liable and it would behoove toyota to be proactive in this regard. The salesperson i spoke with at magnussens dealership in auburn california (glenn tuccinardi) assured me this would not be a problem given my standard rim size at the time i bought the vehicle. I knew there was a vibration/instability problem on some tundras before i bought it based on websites i visited which is why i raided the question at the time of the sale. Glenn tuccinardi assured me that happened only on tundras with larger rims. He is incorrect.

Rough ride, bed bounce this is the worst riding truck i have ever had. I cant even take my family for a ride. I have two kids and they both and up getting sick. I have talked with toyota about it and said they are working on a fix. They are not saying they are going to fix it or they are not. They just told me they are aware of the problem. I hope they fix it soon or i will never buy a toyota again. I have owned toyotas since the 80s. I am very disappointed in the truck.

Description of the Complaint:
We recently bought an 2008 toyota tundra v6 4x2 double cab. I noticed a terrible bed bounce that makes us the passengers and driver dizzy and nauseated. I personally feel it is not a safe truck because this can cause road accidents. I went to the dealer and had this complaint but they say it is the trucks normal characteristic and nothing can be done. I don't think owning and driving an expensive truck just to feel dizzy and nauseated is normal. Can you please help us with this. Toyota should do something to correct this for safety. If i have a pregnant woman riding this car, she will probably have an abortion due to the bed bounce.
